Life is a journey, not a destination. Hmmm, wonder where this Mom in Transition’s journey is heading next. I have been working as a stay at home mom (SAHM) for many months now (my annual review is quickly approaching). Originally, I did not plan on being a SAHM for this long, but that’s fine. Although I have little experience, I seem to have a natural talent (even I am laughing out loud at that statement). Regardless, there is no doubt I have had some great outings and vacations with friends and family…without even having to submit a paid time off request form. Life is good; however, what the heck happened to my career path and professional goals?

People that know me know that I am a goal-oriented individual. I have been a professional business woman for the past 15 years. You don’t just transition away from that overnight and why would you. Well, maybe I would if I won the lottery. I suppose the good news is that I probably will never be faced with such a big decision. The current reality is that I am not actively engaged in the workforce. Sure I remain active with my networks and professional organizations; however, this is not very challenging or really any sort of goal. I wonder if some fabulous job that offers work life balance and pays six digits will suddenly fall into my lap or if I will have an epiphany that will lead me to a new career direction. Does this happen in real life?

It’s hard to say if I will still be a SAHM in a year, 6 months or even 2 months from now. My career path has transitioned into unfamiliar territory. Sure I could stay the course of a SAHM, but I am not convinced that this is the path for me. I am looking for the signs of my next professional opportunity that complements my role as a mother, but I have not found anything yet. I sure hope the signs are obvious…on second thought, maybe I should just play the lottery more often. Does winning the lottery qualify as a professional goal? In the meantime, this mom in transition looks forward to planning and celebrating my 1 year anniversary in my current position (oh, I mean our daughter’s birthday).
