Until Saturday evening I had never even heard of Gander, Newfoundland…now I can’t stop thinking about it. Did anyone see Tom Brokaw’s story on Gander during the Olympics? What an amazing story of a town coming together to welcome and care for total strangers without any time to prepare. The people of Gander literally opened up their homes and showers to these international travelers that were stranded for days. We are often reminded of the terrorist acts of September 11th and how our world has changed since; however, we don’t often hear the stories of unconditional kindness and generosity that supported our nation during that terrible time. The story of Gander is definitely worth knowing.

Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in finding any official NBC links to the story. However, many bloggers were just as moved by the story as I was. Gander is a town of almost 10,000 residents. The Gander International Airport normally lands a handful of planes. However, on September 11, 2001 when the United States air space was closed to international arriving planes the Gander International Airport landed 39 planes carrying over 6,000 people. The airport had planes parked wing to wing on the runways. You had to see it to believe it. Once the planes were landed, Gander had to process all these guests through customs. I do wonder where they found all the staff to make this happen. It did take time. The last passengers were not let off the plane until 12 noon the next day. Can you imagine?

From the moment these guests were processed and shuttled into town, the people of Gander took care of them. Community buildings were shut down and opened to the people. Food, clothing and toiletries were made available. Those that needed prescriptions received them. Residents offered their homes for people to stay or just take a shower. Keep in mind passengers were not able to have their checked luggage. It makes me wonder how I would have fared. Tom Brokaw’s story also showed us the lifetime friendships that were formed during these days. These residents were absolute life savers.

It’s a shame that NBC does not have this story on their web site. If you find it, please let me know. Do check out this link… http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2006/09/11/gander-911.html . I hope we never face another national tragedy of such magnitude; however, I do aspire to someday exemplify the caring and courageous acts of the people of Gander. Also, if I am ever stranded in a foreign town without my luggage, I really hope I meet someone from Gander. Enjoy your weekend.
