This mom in transition is researching the role of a stay at home mom (SAHM). What does this mean? What are the responsibilities of this role? It seems that each SAHM and significant other may have a different definition of the required job duties of this position. I suppose there is not one job description to fit all…luckily.
To me my role is perfectly clear…take care of the (complex) needs of my child (safe environment, food, bath, cute clothing, social opportunities, developmental challenges…I’m exhausted just writing this list) and possibly check off some fun projects on my to do list. Why not? My SAHM role is 24/7…I should fit in fun with any opportunity I have. Isn’t it true that one’s engagement and productivity are much higher when in a role that you love and enjoy?
What are the other responsibilities that may be a part of this job description? Is it to be a maid, cook, chauffeur, party planner, errand person, etc? I don’t know about you, but I did most of these things while I worked and will continue the same responsibilities. However, I refuse to now be the maid (outside of what I normally do) and the cook. SAHM or not, I will not spend my few spare hours cleaning (unless we are having company of course) or preparing elaborate high calorie meals that take hours to prepare and only 10 minutes to eat (once again, only if we are having company). This surely will make this mom in transition hate her new job as SAHM.
I do realize that Veronica will not be eating meals from a baby food jar forever. I will need to make sure she eats well balanced meals every day (wow, my work load is growing)…every single day…sure I can do it with proper direction. Regardless, I still refuse to spend the afternoon preparing dinner. Lunch should be one’s biggest meal of the day anyway and we always have lunch meat. There is nothing wrong with cereal and bananas for breakfast and dinner.
The SAHM responsibilities of this mom in transition are evolving. I definitely need to get more projects off my list (I won’t be at home forever). I still wonder what the job descriptions for other SAHMs look like…of course I am only interested in the fun stuff. My research continues…
